No de hogy valami értelemeset is írjak:
Ali megemlítette, hogy év végéig szeretnének kirukkolni egy új albummal.
Itt egy kis régi, de tanulságos interjú olvasgatni ...

Interview with MONORAL

Before the release of their new album, JaME met with the two members to talk about their origins, the new album and alcohol!

Please introduce yourselves to our readers who may not be familiar with you.

Anis: We're called MONORAL (laughs). What else... my name is Anis.
Ali: and I'm Ali, I play bass. Anis sings.
Anis: ...dances sometimes.

How did you decide on the band name MONORAL and is there a particular reason or message behind the name?

Ali: Well we spelled it wrong basically. We wanted to call ourselves 'Monaural' but to tell you the truth we couldn't get the .com for Monaural so a lot of the time in Japan we spell 'MONAURAL' like 'MONORAL'.
Anis: I just like the design on The Beatles' albums. It was always written 'Monoral' and I kind of like the 'MONO'. I think it's better than 'Au' actually. 'Au' sounds really French.
Ali: Yeah yeah.
Anis: The spelling. But we had all kinds of different names at the time, before we decided on MONORAL. Some crazy names, names in Japanese.

For example?

Anis: Jidouhanbaiki (vending machine). Because you know all the bands in Japan have long names and then kind of make them small. Like Mr Children are called 'MrChiru'; they abbreviate everything. So we were hoping that if we were Jidouhanbaiki they would call us 'Jihan'.
Ali: We were happy that we settled for MONORAL instead of Jihan.

Could you tell us a little more about how you both began in a band? Because you both began as VJs?

Ali: We were both playing in a band, Anis had his band, I had my band. Anis debuted as a solo artist when he was 19 and I played with other musicians and did support work. So we were both pretty much into doing music but... how did we start... Basically we were working together as VJs and we both liked what we were playing in the dressing room so we decided to get together and try.
Anis: It was an accident, I didn't mean to be there. (laughs) I was just, you know....
Ali: Your video jockey experience was just an accident.
Anis: Yeah.
Ali: Actually he was really good...
Anis: No, not really.
Ali: He had really nice cute clothes on, he was the morning man. (imitates) "Good morning people!"
Anis: I did a lot of those, it was really interesting but yeah it got us together to start a band. It was really great.

What is the band's concept? Is there a deeper, underlying meaning of your music or do you simply do it for fun?

Anis: We just wanted to get together and make cool music. We didn't think that much at the time. We tried to get other members to join us but we were basically concentrating on making songs at the beginning, for the first like six months.
Ali: Right, well initially... personally, to get rich and famous was kind of an underlying motive. But once we got together and started writing together, the songs we were making were pretty interesting to both of us so we thought this might turn out to be a cool band.

What are some of your main inspirations for songwriting?

Ali: Right, our main inspiration... basically experience. We both like music that has emotion and enables you to imagine scenery so for me personally I tend to base my songwriting on the emotional side.

So what are some of these experiences?

Ali: Well basically every experience, you have both the sweet and the bitter sides.
Anis: I think even if you don't think about your experience or whatever, it just comes out through the sound and through the lyrics. It's just natural I guess. I don't think that something appears when I am writing music but after two or three years I realise 'Oh, maybe I was talking about that. Maybe that happened to me'.

So it just subliminally comes out.

Anis: Yeah pretty much.

How is the work of writing your songs divided up? Does one of you primarily take care of lyrics while the other takes care of music, or are all of your songs joint projects from the very start?

Ali: It's very much about... you know, Anis might come up with a chord progression or melody and I might write a part for it. Or I might just write the whole song and Anis might add more aspects to it or vice versa. Anything goes, basically. The weirdest part is the lyric writing because we both tend to write about totally different things for the same song so it is harder to reach a conclusion.

Do you try to combine these varied ideas?

Ali: We do and it really turns out so abstract that we have no idea what we were writing about half the time... (everyone starts laughing) "Oh you were talking about that?" or "Oh it's a he??" You know.

Your lyrics are all sung in English, even though you both speak Japanese and live and perform in Japan. What is the reason behind your lyrics being only in English?

Anis: Growing up I just used to listen to a lot of English songs. I grew up living in France. My parents were listening to The Beatles, the Stones, so it was just natural for me to sing in English. It was easy, easier than French or Arabic or Japanese.

Would you ever include those other languages in your recordings?

Anis: Umm...
Ali: Actually he sings very nicely in French.
Anis: Horrible in Japanese though, singing-wise, because I haven't listened to much Japanese music so I don't know what's cool or catchy. But I listened to a lot of French songs when I was living in France so yeah, French is interesting.
Ali: I am trying to push him to sing in French or Arabic but obviously I can't write any of the lyrics...

On the other hand, do you ever feel misunderstood by your Japanese fans?

Anis: It was actually... we were saying that maybe these days in Japan language won't matter as much. But maybe it would be much easier for listeners in Japan if we were singing in Japanese. Still working on that one. I would like to try actually, but haven't tried it yet.

You should try to make something with all four languages in it

Anis: (laughs) Yeah it's really difficult. The melodies are really difficult to make in Japanese actually.

In what way? To fit around the Japanese lyrics?

Anis: You have the um...
Ali: It's the syllables, it's a little bit different from English. English is probably much more of a musical a language than Japanese. That's an opinion but that's how we feel, basically.
Anis: It is difficult to have long tones in Japanese because everything ends with a e i o u, there's nothing else. In a lot of Japanese music they slice the tones a lot, they don't have a lot of long tones compared to the English.
Ali: And they change the pronunciation of the word to fit in with the melody.

In the beginning of your career, you already performed at the legendary Fuji Rock festival. How did you get that opportunity and how did it feel for you to be part of such a big festival right away in your career?

Anis: We released a mini album in July at that time and whenever an artist or someone releases something before Fuji Rock they get a chance to play.
Ali: Not really.
Anis: Not really? I have no idea actually.
Ali: Well, when we first released In Stereo, InterFM really liked it and put it on the A rotation. They suggested to the organizer SMASH to book us in on the Newcomer stage. The first time we went we were really excited but this was a new stage and it was actually outside the gate right beside the garbage dump (Anis starts laughing again) so it was like, yeah, we didn't really make it into the gate. But it was a blast though, it was fun, and we got to play on one of the main stages last year, which was fun.
Anis: It took us like three years to get into the gate but it was well worth it.

Are you going to go this year just as spectators?

Ali: Yes, this year Anis will be working on the album and I will drop by Fuji Rock to see My Bloody Valentine who are coming over. I plan to go there and have a blast while this guy works.

Both of you have also worked in many other professions. What is it that fascinates you about being a musician?

Anis: It's just so hard to be a musician so I guess we are both pretty crazy about music.
Ali: Yeah, it's a really bad deal actually.
Anis: Yeah it takes a lot of time but a lot of people don't understand that. It takes a lot of time to record, write, rehearse and then the shows...
Ali: The industry itself... it's a very hard time right now with CD sales going down and so forth. But the great part about it is, and I don't think it's only musicians who experience this, making something out of nothing with a lot of people, it's a very fascinating thing to do. It is always exciting. There are a lot of hurdles and it is hard a lot of the time but it's a great joy to be able to make something with your buddies. That is the part I love the most.

You've been throwing a Halloween party every year; how did that idea arise and how did it become a MONORAL tradition?

Anis: We just like to party. When we started our Halloween parties in Japan there were not a lot of bands doing that so we're still thinking we should expand the Halloween party. In Japan they love festivals so... it is really fun for us because it is a different stage with everyone dressed up.
Ali: When you play a gig in Japan they want you to put a name to it every time. So before we released anything we needed an excuse to play a gig so it was Christmas gig or Halloween gig but this one really caught on. I still remember the first one: the audience was terrific. They were all dressed up, more so than us. We just had a blast so we kept it going.

You've dressed up as pirates, vampires and even in drag. How do you choose what costumes you'll wear for your Halloween party?

Ali: It is getting more dreadful every year. It used to be really fun for the first three years but then after that the places became bigger and bigger. Of course it is still a lot of fun but we spend a long time pondering how we are going to dress.
Anis: We're going to start preparing next week actually 'cause we take a lot of time.
Ali: We are awfully slow at deciding anything.

Do you have any ideas yet for this year?

Anis: I want a horse on stage.
Ali: You want a horse on stage. Yeah having an animal is one of our goals.

Oh an actual horse! I though you meant a pantomime horse or something.

Anis: No no no, a real horse on stage.
Ali: We'll try to work that one out.
Anis: Horse... horses?

Is there any dream costume?

Ali: Anis wants to do "Star Wars".
Anis: Yeah, I'd like to do that some time with the whole gang.

Who would be Darth Vader?

Anis: I have no idea.... umm... everybody I guess. I wouldn't want to be Chewbacca, too hot..
Ali: Ah yeah it's too hot. Darth would be too.
Anis: But I have always wanted to do something where we can all be from the same TV show. Like "Star Wars", or "Star Trek". Anything that starts with 'Star' is fine. Oh and the horse.
Ali: Yeah and the horse, right.

You are currently on HYDE's label VAMPROSE. How did you get the chance to become part of the label's roster and before that on Haunted Records?

Ali: To tell you the truth, Haunted Records and VAMPROSE ... well Haunted Records is owned by Sony but it is run by HYDE. VAMPROSE is run by VAMPROSE... there's not much of a difference to us to tell you the truth, so we don't know how we ended up on VAMPROSE.

So it was completely natural...

Ali: Yeah it was completely natural. MONORAL has released albums from a different label every time. Somehow it seems that every label just kicks us out and VAMPROSE has been keeping us the longest so far, so we are very grateful.

And how did you start with Haunted Records?

Ali: That is basically how we met HYDE.
Anis: We played together and he liked our music, and that's how it came to be.
Ali: We don't know why he liked us.
Anis: I don't think there is a reason when it comes to liking music...
Ali: True.
Anis: He just kind of liked the music and we went to drink a lot and he got drunk at a certain point and just asked us to join the label I guess. Alcohol is the reason. HYDE got drunk and then we were all family.
Ali: HYDE is really great because he is a musician too. It is fascinating to see him work, he is such a hard worker and we have been inspired by his mentality in creating things and his energy.
Anis: But the reason is still alcohol.

Going with the L'Arc~en~Ciel vein, during your recent concert Ken appeared. Was that a last minute decision or pre-planned?

Anis: Alcohol! He called me twenty minutes before the show and asked if he could some see us. He was like "Can I play a song? That's not possible right?" and I was like "No no, it's cool you can play a song". "Really are you sure?" and I was like "Yeah, come over". That is really how it happened, he called me before the show. He was really surprised because normally before the show nobody talks on the phone. He was laughing, like "Dude you are really stupid".
Ali: He was probably kidding when he said he wanted to play a song.
Anis: No he was really serious. We played with him a lot on their tour, we were opening for them and we had a lot of fun so... it was really fun at the end doing that.

So because it was a last minute decision you also decided on a more familiar song?

Ali: Well he wanted to play a guitar solo so we picked a song out of our setlist where he could mess around with his guitar and it happened to be Helter Skelter.
Anis: It was really fun, it was kind of magical when he got on the stage and we started playing. It changed somehow... it was amazing.

Also at your last concert you played a new song (Casbah) that you have described on your blog to be Arabic metal.

Anis: Yeah I like that phrase.

Arabic metal?

Anis: Yeah.

Could you explain a little more about the concept behind Arabic metal?

Anis: When we started making the song it sounded to me to be pretty Arabian, in the scale, and this dude here was saying it was metal so I thought "Oh cool, this is Arabian metal". It might be new.

Would you ever employ any of the more traditional Arabian instruments in your songs?

Anis: Ali played a Peruvian instrument that he bought when he went there so we didn't use any Arabic instruments. We did use some weird instruments in the recording so it might sound a little...
Ali: We like using other instruments that other rock bands wouldn't use but at the same time Anis has the Moroccan blood in him and he does have the Arabian kind of scent in him any time he sings or does some improvisation in his voice, so I don't think there is a need to actually add a real Arabic instrument as such because he already has that taste when he sings. So we go for other kinds of instruments.

So as you are making your new album are there any more fascinating styles like the Arabic metal? What can you tell us about your new and upcoming material?

Ali: Well we're working on it now.
Anis: We're trying to make a lot of different types of songs in this album, as much as we can... so it is not all Arabian metal. I think this album is like... well we have a lot of songs that are related to the old albums like Ammonite and in stereo, it's all kind of linked and we are trying to figure it out to make the link with everything.
Ali: It is interesting but when we are making an album we don't see the bigger picture behind the album until we finish it. But I think it's going to be an album that has diversity, more so than the last one we did. We won't know until we finish it, but so far that is our vision.
Anis: It always sounds good with a lot of alcohol.

You say you like to use different instruments that other bands never use; would you ever employ the use of alcohol and make your bottles into instruments.

Anis: Not yet but it is a good idea. We try a lot of instruments... whatever we can.

What has been the strangest?

Ali: Probably... well it's not strange but the oboe.
Anis: A friend of mine is a professional player but it is very hard for a classical musician to improvise and play without sheet music. But that was our first song we recorded so it was really...
Ali: We do a lot of different things with the guitars: tune them differently, put them through different effectors... We just try to do things that normally you wouldn't do, we like weird sounds so we do that a lot. We spend a lot of time on that when we should be concentrating more on the other parts. We spend a lot of time just making noises basically. With MONORAL we kind of like the beautiful melody in the midst of chaos, it is very important to us to create that chaotic sound by experimenting.
Anis: It's always cool to listen to it with headphones, you can always find new sounds or noises that you don't hear from the speakers.
Ali: A lot of the time our engineers will cut down on the noises we make which is a shame.
(makes whooshing sounds)
"You don't need this!"
"But we spent 3 days doing this!" (laughs)

Both of you have and are also working on many other projects and bands. How does working with these projects differ from working as MONORAL?

Ali: Well, other projects are more smooth than MONORAL projects.
Anis: Actually it is really different because in other projects we see a lot more of what's going on than with MONORAL. When we start working as MONORAL we can't see around but with other projects we're more relaxed, and more able to function as human beings.
Ali: We get things done on time and so forth.
Anis: But somehow with MONORAL we become so concentrated on one point that other things don't matter any more. It takes a long time to make music as MONORAL (Ali laughs). It's not alcohol though! A lot of the time, I don't know why but it is really endless... like we spend 14 hours in a room without eating... 14 hours.
Ali: And we get nothing done.
Anis: We get like one new sound: "This is cool dude!"... 14 hours. That's us I guess.

Out of all these collaborations, which has been the most challenging to you as musicians, with or without alcohol?

Ali: With or without alcohol... what was the most challenging thing we have ever done...
Anis: It's the new album, dude. Probably...
Ali: I'd say the same. This album we're doing right now has been the most challenging so far for us.
Anis: We don't have a lot of time. We're starting the tour in August and we have to finish the album during the tour.
Ali: And it is all our fault... because we were slow.
Anis: It has never happened before, usually we make the album before the tour, at least one month before, so we can start rehearsals but this time everything has come at the same time: rehearsal, recording, the tour... the alcohol.
Ali: It is getting very interesting.
Anis: Very challenging.

What other future projects do you have in mind?

Anis: We would love to play abroad, after the Japanese tour if possible.

What kind of countries would you like to visit the most?

Anis: I'd actually like to go back to Paris and play as MONORAL. I have a lot of friends there and they know MONORAL and it would be really great to play in my hometown after 14 years. That would be really exciting doing an MC in French. You know, as a Japanese band singing in English, it's all messed up. Yeah, but that would be really nice.

Please leave a final message for your overseas fans.

Ali: As Anis said, we are really looking forward to going abroad. We've gotten a lot of messages from the international listeners in the past few years, especially through MySpace. We are really appreciative of that. It really means a lot to us to know that there are people outside Japan who listen to our product. That is really a fascinating thing for us and we would love to go abroad and play in front of those people. We are really really grateful for the support, and from the Japanese fans too. They are great. We feel very fortunate to be able to be doing this.
Anis: There are really a lot of people from France, Italy, Europe, the States, Australia... We love that different people write to us telling us that they love our songs. Basically we were always dreaming about that; having our music listened to by people in a lot of different countries, so I really hope we can start to go there and do gigs. We hope that we will be able to do that either this year or next year. I would really love to see them.
Ali: See them in person.
Anis: Yeah.

We wish you all the best of success and thank you very much for the interview today.
