Angura Kei:
Angura Kei (アングラ系 Lit. Underground Style) is often classified as sub-genre within visual kei. However, in actuality, Angura Kei finds its roots way back during the 60's. The word 'Angura' is a Japanese abbreviation of the word 'underground'. The concept was first applied by independent Japanese theatre companies who wanted to create something uniquely Japanese. This was almost a 'counter-culture' movement, with aims to challenge the authenticity of so-called 'traditional' genres as well as the westernization that had swept across Japan since the industrial age. In similarity to EroGuro, themes are often of a sexual nature, though more in response to the free love movements of the 60's
Eroguro:
EroGuro (エログロ) is a Japanese artistic and cultural movement and music sub-genre. The word EroGuro is formed from the apparently contradictory words Erotic and Grotesque. Most often seen as a sub-genre within Visual Kei, EroGuro's first distinct appearance first really began in 1920s and 1930s Japanese literature. After World War I, many cultures in many countries saw a rise in liberation, expecially with the cultural movements such as Jazz, the women's rights movements and Café culture. Particularly, there was similar jubilation as seen in Germany before Adolf Hitler ascended to power.
The typifying elements of EroGuro are of the macabre intermingled with sexual overtones. Often the erotic element, even when not explicit, is merged with grotesque themes and features - rather similar to the works of H. R. Giger.
Over time, the Eroguro movement expanded its proverbial tendrils into parts of Japanese theatre, art, Manga, and eventually film.
EroGuro bands typically use shock visuals (as well as lyrics and live imagery). It has long been rumoured that Cali≠Gari were the responsible for the application of the term to music.
Other bands who classify as EroGuro include Velvet Eden, Merry, MUCC and early Dir en Grey.
